Awake And Dreaming

Forever and always will we sing the praises of Kenyan coffee. While most of what we encounter is comes through smallholders who process at centralized washing stations, this big and jammy lot from Ibonia Estate hits all the notes we love.

Behind the beans

Region: Kiambu, Central Province
Farm: Ibonia Estate
Alt: 1725 masl
Variety: SL34
Process: fully washed – dried on raised beds

Ibonia Estate spans 197.5 hectares in Kenya's Kiambu region, just 13 kilometers north of Nairobi. Situated at 1,725 meters elevation, the estate's deep, well-drained red volcanic soils create ideal conditions for coffee. Cool temperatures, particularly during the May–July wet season, slow cherry development and extend maturation, concentrating flavour and complexity in every bean.

Processing
Every cherry is handpicked at peak ripeness and pulped the same day. After full fermentation and careful washing, the coffee is thoroughly dried and stored in well-ventilated conditions—a clean, intentional approach that lets the terroir shine.

Stewardship
Ibonia Estate prioritizes environmental care through a sophisticated 16-lagoon water recirculation system that purifies processing wastewater. The property maintains a thriving natural forest ecosystem, protecting indigenous species and providing habitat for diverse wildlife—from weaverbirds and owls to fig and neem trees—creating a balanced agricultural landscape that nourishes both coffee and land.
