Dukunde Kawa is Rwanda's pioneering coffee cooperative, established in 2000 with a commitment to sustainability and social impact. The organization holds Fair Trade, Organic, Rainforest Alliance, and UTZ certifications, and over 80% of its workforce is women.
Mbilima washing station, located at 2,200 meters elevation in Rwanda's Northern province, was established in 2005 to serve local farmers. The high altitude and lush, mineral-rich soils create ideal growing conditions, resulting in the stations' signature bright acidity, and fruity profiles -characteristics unique to Rwanda's bourbon varietals.
This coffee is naturally processed: farmers hand-sort cherry upon delivery, which is then floated to remove defects and dried on exposed tables for up to 45 days. The slow harvest at this elevation extends into October, concentrating flavours and complexity.
